Agricultural Policy Dialogue Brazil – Germany

Brazil is also directly and indirectly affected by the war in Ukraine. 80% of the fertilizer requirements of the Latin American agricultural superpower are imported, in good part from Russia and Belarus. Prices for fuel, fertilizer and food had already risen above average last year and are now growing even faster. Further political uncertainty arises from this fall's election, which seems to be dividing society. Incumbent President Bolsonaro wants to be re-elected, while his strongest rival, former President Lula da Silva, has been ahead by some margin in the polls for months.

In this complex environment, the IAK Agrar Consulting GmbH 2021 launched the Agricultural Policy Dialogue (APD) with Brazil on behalf of GFA/BMEL. It has since consolidated with a broad partner environment of governmental bodies, civil society, academia, and the Brazilian agri-food sector.

The ministries of agriculture of both countries, BMEL and MAPA, have agreed on three interrelated fields of action:

  • Innovative forms of agricultural financing
  • Policies for sustainable value chains
  • Bioeconomy

Several high-level binational events on all three fields of action have already been held.
