Coffee Sustainability Dialogue in Berlin

Highly topical issues were on the agenda at the event "COFFEE – SUSTAINABILITY DIALOGUE: to a pot of the future" organised by INA, the Initiative for Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, in Berlin on May 4-5, 2023:

  • How can we succeed in ensuring that the incomes of all actors in the coffee value chain secure their livelihoods?
  • Transparency and traceability (also) with regard to regulations: How can the new German Supply Chain Sourcing Obligations Act and the new EU regulation on deforestation-free supply chains be implemented in the coffee value chain? Both directives are very drastic and it is not yet clear for all sectors how this can work.
  • Climate crisis in the coffee sector – contributor and/or affected party?

Sven Gehlhaar, Managing Director of IAK Agrar Consulting GmbH, found out about the latest developments in traceability and monitoring of value chains in the coffee and other sectors for IAK, which has its own sustainability assessment system, DINAK. In linking and exchanging with other active actors in this field, the focus was also on advanced sustainability assessment, e.g. through the inclusion of essential future indicators such as living wage, freedom from deforestation and no child labour.
