Strengthening sustainable forest management in Ukraine: Forestry experts from Ukrderzhlisproekt visit IAK in Leipzig

Since October 2024, IAK Agrar Consulting GmbH (lead partner) has been implementing the project “Promotion of multifunctional sustainable forest management planning and implementation in Ukraine” funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in a consortium with unique land use GmbH. Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming Ukrainian partners, including Viktor Melnychenko, Head of Ukrderzhlisproekt, and Andriy Shamray, Head of the National Forest Inventory Department of Ukraine. Ukrderzhlisproekt is the Ukrainian state enterprise for planning state forestry.

Against the backdrop of the current challenges and difficult conditions in forest management in Ukraine, we spoke with our guests and the project team connected online about the new project content, the current need for adaptation in view of the restricted access to contested areas and the strategic objectives of the project.

This resulted in a clear and detailed agreement on the key results areas, e.g. the further use and utilization of the data collected as part of the National Forest Inventory of Ukraine, the challenges in the operational development and coordination of sustainable and multifunctional forest management of the state enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” and the forest policy coordination process for forest management measures in Ukraine. These and other approaches will be presented, discussed and, if necessary, supplemented at the upcoming meeting of the project steering group.

The focus was also on targeted support for the technical work of Ukrderzhlisproekt. For example, IAK handed over urgently needed material resources, including power generators, which were financed from project funds and are intended to significantly facilitate operations on site.
