Sustainable use and management of agrobiodiversity as a contribution to the transformation to climate-resilient food systems and innovative promotion of rural regions – establishment of a bilateral Sino-German network

About the project
As part of the Innovation and Transformation Dialogue (ITD) of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the Sino-German Agricultural Center (DCZ) has established a bilateral expert network on the sustainable use and conservation of agrobiodiversity.
The network includes experts from science, agricultural practice and civil society organizations from both countries. It is intended to provide a platform for the exchange and processing of joint findings and to share these with relevant stakeholders from politics, research and practice.
The focus is on cooperation between German and Chinese experts with experience in the conservation, recultivation and sustainable use of crop diversity, especially historical, rare and farmer varieties at farm level.
Central objectives
- Establishment of an interdisciplinary network for the exchange of best practices and policy recommendations
- Creation of a practical toolbox with best practice examples, case studies and research results
- Making the results visible and disseminating them to support political decision-making processes and raise awareness among a broader public
- Long-term: development of joint research projects, e.g., on intercropping, and promotion of sustainable agricultural value chains in both countries
Toolbox
A comprehensive toolbox is available on the project website. It contains project overviews from both countries, documented examples of best practice, findings from the cooperation and scientific publications.
