Sustainable use of genetic resources and agrobiodiversity
Sustainable use of genetic resources and the conservation of agrobiodiversity build a fundamental basis for the adaptive capacity of agricultural production systems. Strengthening those processes is, therefore, of paramount importance to safeguard global food production in the face of climate change.
Since the 1960s IAK works on advisory services in the seed sector and still considers this as one of their core competences. In numerous projects in Afghanistan, Uruguay, North Korea, Argentina, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Madagascar, China, etc IAK analysed formal and informal seed systems and fostered sustainable development and cooperation of both systems.
Our activities in conserving and adapting (plant and animal) genetic resources are supported by a strong network of partners, such as the Cattle Association of Saxony-Anhalt (RSA) and cooperation with public institutions, such as the German Plant Variety Office.
